Securing your residence – for many people, summer means vacation, while for others it’s the getaway from cold weather, and vacation can mean being out of your house for longer than usual.

Many vacationers think their home might be safer while they’re gone. When you’re on vacation, the last thing you want is a phone call letting you know your home has been burglarized… or worse… that you’re returning from vacation to find damage and loss. Here are some tips to keep your home safe.

securing your residence

  1. Before you leave, check every door and window to make sure everything is locked and locked, including your garage door, closet, and basement windows. Also, make sure there are no other keys “hidden” under the roof or the rock around you. Thieves know where to look and the key makes it easy to find. If you have a sliding window or door, place a wooden or long metal rod over the screen so you can’t open it.
  2. Put a timer on the lights outside your home. The darker the exterior of your home, the happier it will be for burglars because they cannot be seen. Also, timing helps create a sense of home.
  3. Make sure your magazines and mail are picked up or dropped off. If you have a pile of cards and papers outside your house, it’s pretty clear that someone hasn’t been home in a while.
  4. Leave a blind or curtain open. When your house is completely locked up, it feels like no one is there. The more attractive you are, the less likely it is that you are far from it.
  5. Arrange for a trusted family member, neighbor or friend to check on your home. Even if they have to go to their house to water the plants, they can look around to make sure everything is fine.
  6. A good reminder to go on vacation is to make sure you have up-to-date household items including appliances, jewelry, firearms, and other valuables.
  7. If you have any money, jewelry, or other valuables in your home, take them out and put them in a safe. This service costs money, but it’s far better than someone being able to break into your home and search for your valuables.
  8. If you are a gun owner, please ensure that all firearms are stored and stored safely in accordance with Canadian Firearms Act and Regulations.
  9. Organize electronics in the home. Put one on a lamp or even a radio. If someone inspects your home and finds that there is no activity going on inside your home, it is a clear indication that you are not home.
  10. Make sure your home security system is on. Don’t forget to tell a friend or family member about the rules so they don’t set off an alarm when your home is being inspected.

Vacation is supposed to be a time to relax. As long as you take the necessary precautions, there is no reason to spend time worrying about securing your residence.
